Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo Book Review

Heyyaa folks!

I am back with a review of the first book of an absolutely amazing fantasy series, Shadow and Bone. This review might get a bit biased as I am in love with fantasy worlds. I will try my level best to keep this review spoiler-free.

The storyline of Shadow and Bone

Shadow and Bone is the building block of the Grishaverse. A 17-year-old girl, Alina Starkov is the protagonist of the book. She is an ordinary cryptographer in Keramzin until she realises that she is a Grisha and can emit light. Now begins the thrill. There is a Shadow Fold in Ravka which has monsters called Volcras. Alina along with other Grishas (who were elite people of the army who possessed several powers) and the ordinary army crossed the fold. Their ship gets attacked by the Volcras. Alina emits unbelievable light to save her best friend Mal. Everybody considers that Alina is the Sun Summoner, who would the savior of Ravka according to the legend.

“The problem with wanting,” he whispered, his mouth trailing along my jaw until it hovered over my lips, “is that it makes us weak.” ― Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone

The Darkling is the leader of the Grisha’s, he ensures that Alina gets the right training. Everything seems to be going fine when suddenly all beliefs shatter and Alina’s world turns upside down. The romantic relationships seemed toxic but I was all in for some drama. The plot of Shadow and Bone made me fall in love with the series and it has become one of my favourites.

“I’ve been waiting for you a long time, Alina” He said. “You and I are going to change the world.”― Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone

I loved escaping into the Grishaverse and a side plot of romance made it 100 times better. I literally felt like I am the protagonist…hehe. I felt so connected to Alina that I was always at the edge of my seat and couldn’t put the book down. The world-building in Shadow and Bone is breathtaking.

All the science behind the magic has been explained very well, the gaudy clothes worn by the Grishas have been discussed in detail. This world-building makes it very easy to comprehend. I found a perfect blend of several emotions. The book has romance, friendships, new beginnings and amazing plot twists. The vocabulary used is easy to read which makes it very beginner friendly.

The book covers are absolutely gorgeous. I had no idea about the storyline when I started reading Shadow and Bone. The book covers attracted me towards giving it a read. I am looking forward to reading the other two books as well. I am really curious to see how would Alina accept the newly acquired powers. Is Alina actually a saviour? Stay tuned for their reviews too.

If you have read this series then do let me know about your views as well.

See you super soon!

Happy reading!
